Product description:
Native to Peru, Ecuador, The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and The Galapagos Islands, the aromatic tree Bursera graveolens is also found in other dry tropical forests along the coast of South America.
It was named Palo Santo meaning “Holy Wood” or “Wood of The Saints” by Spanish monks when they discovered it 300 years ago, but its origins can be traced as far back as the Incan Empire circa AD 1400 and 1533.
Throughout Amazonia, indigenous folk healers aka Curandero or Shamans use Palo Santo EO or burn its sticks to attract good luck, purify the environment by repelling negative energies and improve spirituality during praying.
It is on par and can be used interchangeably with White Sage (Salvia apiana) for energy cleansing and is also a botanical cousin of Frankincense, Myrrh and Galbanum, all incense trees renowned for their powerful purifying and energy cleansing abilities.
It is believed that the spirit of this mystical tree which can live up to 90 years lives in the wood long after the tree itself has fallen and when treated respectfully will help restore the user’s physical and energetic wellbeing. Therefore, Palo Santo trees should be harvested properly and never cut down but allowed to die naturally. It is in fact illegal in Ecuador, Guatemala, and Peru to cut down the trees, due to their strict environmental laws, however natives are permitted to gather its wood.
Most amazingly, its wood is of no value unless it dies of natural causes, and left to lay on the forest floor for at least 4-10 years untouched during which a natural chemical process occurs to ensure its resins move to its heartwood and its rich fragrant essential oil properly develop into the fully aromatic high quality product with its full properties and benefits intact which would not happen without the process of natural death and decay. Native cultures say the spirits of the Palo Santo trees materialize themselves in the essential oil and are responsible for its potent therapeutic qualities.
There has been controversy regarding the sustainability of Palo Santo, so we need to clarify: There are 2 species colloquially referred to as Palo Santo one of which Bulsenia sarmientoi has been designated as threatened by The International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUCN). Our Palo Santo EO is from Bursera graveolens which is listed as “of least concern”, however the tropical, dry forest which is its natural habitat itself IS threatened so there is still some concern on its future sustainability.
Our Palo Santo was expertly distilled by indigenous artisans with generations of experience from heartwood of old Bursera graveolens trees that had died of natural causes and no human interference whatsoever and lain on the forest floor for at least 6 years in accordance with Ecuadorian Environment Laws before gathering by natives who were paid a fair wage.
